Arrested Development讲的是一个很有钱的家庭Bluth家庭的故事.主角Michael是家中二子，他一直辛辛苦苦的为家族工作，希望有一天能够接替父亲George Sr.的位置.结果在第一集里，爸爸George Sr.把董事长的位置交给了他妈妈Lucille.就在大家庆祝爸爸的退休聚会的时候，警察出现，带走了George Sr.，罪名是他们家族的人把集团当成了私人提款机，到处乱花钱.Michael原本很受伤，打算去另一个公司工作，最后还是决定留在家族打理各种事务.主要角色还包括GOB,Michael的大哥（由Amy Poler的老公扮演）.GOB是一位魔术师，成天只有破坏没有建设，还有点异想天开.Michael的儿子，George Michael（汗）.George Michael有着良好的家教，算是这个自私自利家族里的异端（他爸爸偶尔会耍点怀心眼），曾经暗恋自己的堂妹Maeby（发音Maybe).Maeby 的妈妈就是Michael的妹妹Lindsay.毫无工作的她目前正在和丈夫Tobias处在离婚边缘.花钱大手大脚，有点大小姐.Tobias原本是个心理医生，因为无意中救错人而被吊销执照.希望成为一名演员，同样有些异想天开.他很害怕暴露身体，所以从来里面都穿着条牛仔短裤，这也使得他和 Lindsay的性生活很有问题.Buster是家族中最小的儿子，因为从小到大都和妈妈住在一起，所以有些恋母情节（更感觉有些同性恋）.在第二季度因为老妈被一个长得象Michael Morre的人逼问会不会送小孩去伊拉克而被报名参军.之后赌气下海游泳而被海豹咬掉左手，目前用铁钩代替.
